CleanMyMac refund: how to get your money back (MacPaw, App Store, Setapp)
Who to ask, how long you have, what MacPaw's policy says about renewals, why your bank statement may say Paddle, and the exact steps for each place you can buy CleanMyMac.
You got a CleanMyMac charge you didn't expect, or you tried the app and it isn't for you. Can you get your money back? Often yes, but the answer depends on two things: where you bought it, and how long ago.
This guide goes through every case using MacPaw's, Apple's, Setapp's and Paddle's own pages, all checked on September 30, 2026. Policies change, so if you read this months from now, open the linked pages before you write to anyone.
Who do you ask for a CleanMyMac refund?
Not always MacPaw. The company that took your money is the one that handles the refund:
| Where you bought it | Who handles the refund | Time limit |
|---|---|---|
| MacPaw store (macpaw.com) | MacPaw, through a support ticket | 30 days, or 14 days for monthly plans |
| Mac App Store | Apple, on reportaproblem.apple.com | Set by Apple, varies by country |
| Setapp | Setapp, through a support ticket | 30 days (annual, one-time), 14 days (other plans) |
If you're not sure, search your inbox for "CleanMyMac" and look at who sent the receipt. MacPaw itself sends App Store customers to Apple's refund page and Setapp customers to Setapp's.
How to get a refund from MacPaw
If you bought CleanMyMac on macpaw.com, MacPaw's refund page (updated August 11, 2026) says it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on all its products. You're eligible if:
- no more than 30 days have passed since your purchase;
- your case isn't one of the exceptions listed in MacPaw's refund policy.
To ask, submit a ticket to MacPaw's support team and choose the Request a refund option. Include the email address you used to buy and your order number if you have it.
If the refund is approved, MacPaw's policy says it should show up on your card statement within 7 to 10 business days. After that, you have to stop using the app, and MacPaw may disable your license key.
The fine print in MacPaw's refund policy
The 30 days on the support page are the general rule. MacPaw's full refund policy (updated July 31, 2025) adds details that matter:
- Monthly plans have 14 days, not 30. If you subscribed on or after November 23, 2024 to a plan billed monthly or more often, the request has to come within 14 days of the initial purchase. Everyone else gets 30 days.
- The clock starts at the initial purchase. After the window closes, MacPaw says it won't refund, except when the purchase was fraudulent.
- Renewals aren't covered. Refunds apply to the initial subscription purchase, not to payments from an automatic renewal.
- Some cases can be declined: buying for the wrong platform, not being able to run the software on your setup, "operator error", or signs of refund abuse or license misuse.
- Sale prices aren't adjusted. If the price drops during a sale after you bought, MacPaw won't refund the difference, and a coupon can't be applied to an order after checkout.
I was charged for a renewal. Can I get that back?
This is the case most people search for, and MacPaw's written policy is not on your side: renewal payments aren't included in its refunds. Here's what you can still do:
- Cancel right away, so there's no next renewal. Our step-by-step guide shows how to cancel your CleanMyMac subscription for each place you can buy it.
- Write to MacPaw support anyway, explaining that you didn't mean to renew. The policy lists what it covers, and nothing stops you from asking. Just don't count on a yes.
- If you bought through the App Store, the renewal went through Apple, and Apple's own rules apply (see below).
- If you don't recognize the charge at all, check whether it's actually CleanMyMac. The next section helps.
To avoid being caught again, MacPaw's cancel page says you keep access until the end of the period you paid for after canceling, so there's no reason to wait until the last day.
Why does my bank statement say Paddle?
If you see "Paddle" or "Paddle.net" next to the charge, it isn't a scam in itself. Paddle is a Merchant of Record: it sells software on behalf of thousands of companies, so its name is the one on your statement. MacPaw appears among the companies shown on that same Paddle page, and Setapp explains that Paddle is its official billing partner.
On paddle.net, you can look up any Paddle charge with your email or transaction details, find out which product it was for, cancel a subscription or ask for a refund. Paddle notes that in some cases it follows the refund policy of the company whose product you bought, so MacPaw's rules above still apply.
How to get a CleanMyMac refund from the App Store
If you bought CleanMyMac on the Mac App Store, MacPaw can't refund you: its policy says App Store purchases follow Apple's rules. Here are Apple's steps (published September 17, 2026):
- Sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Click I'd like to, then choose Request a refund.
- Choose the reason, then Next.
- Choose the CleanMyMac purchase or subscription, then Submit.
Apple says to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update, and that the money may take longer to come back to your payment method. If you can't find the charge, search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple" to see which Apple Account was used. Refund eligibility varies by country or region, and Apple notes that consumer protection laws still apply where they exist.
How to get a CleanMyMac refund from Setapp
If CleanMyMac came with your Setapp membership, the refund covers Setapp, not just one app. Setapp's conditions are all required:
- You canceled your subscription. Uninstalling Setapp doesn't cancel it.
- You didn't install or open any app from the Setapp membership during the billing period you want refunded. Opening standalone apps or the Setapp desktop app doesn't count against you.
- You ask in time: within 30 days of the last payment for annual plans and one-time purchases, and within 14 days for all other plans.
Then submit a ticket to Setapp support. Setapp adds that eligibility can vary by country, and that AI credit subscriptions and top-ups are non-refundable.
Before you ask: a quick checklist
- Find the receipt and note who sent it (MacPaw, Apple, Setapp or Paddle), the date and the order number.
- Count the days since the initial purchase: 14 or 30 depending on the plan.
- Cancel first, so the refund request isn't followed by another charge.
- Be specific in your message: what you bought, when, and why you want a refund.
- Keep the app closed after asking. MacPaw's policy says you must stop using it once refunded.
What to use instead
You may not need a replacement at all. macOS covers a lot on its own: System Settings, General, Storage shows what takes up space, and Activity Monitor shows what's using your processor and memory. Our comparison of CleanMyMac vs OnyX goes through the other tools.
CleanMochi, the app we make
CleanMochi is our own Mac app, so take this as a description, not a review. It's in open beta and you can download it from cleanmochi.com. You need a Mochi account to use it.

After a scan, Mochi gives your Mac a health score and tells you in one sentence what's pulling it down. Each screen covers one job: cleanup, uninstalling apps with their hidden files, startup items, large files and duplicates, and what's slowing your Mac right now. Apps and leftovers go to the Trash first, so you can put them back. It has no malware scan and no cloud storage cleanup, two things CleanMyMac does.

Does MacPaw refund automatic renewals?
Its written policy says refunds apply to the initial subscription purchase, not to automatic renewals. You can still ask support, but cancel first so you aren't charged again.
How long does a MacPaw refund take?

I bought CleanMyMac on the App Store. Can MacPaw refund me?
No. MacPaw's policy says App Store purchases follow Apple's rules. Request the refund on reportaproblem.apple.com.
